FUNDACIÓN LILLY AWARD FOR PRECLINICAL BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
As part of its vocation to contribute to the development of health in Spain at the service of its citizens and encouraged by the great welcome it received from the Scientific Community for the first Fundación Lilly Awards for Biomedical Research, whose presentation ceremony was honoured by the President of Spain who chaired the event, the Fundación Lilly has announced the second year of its awards. Spain is a European Union member State which is currently at a crucial stage in its consolidation as an economic and industrial power. In order to achieve this status in both areas, we have to make a clear commitment to appropriate scientific development. Support for research, scientific development and technological innovation offers a response to arguments to increase our contribution to the development of knowledge and its applications, and to break free from our excessive technological dependence.

In order to achieve these goals, the Public Administrations are working to increase the available resources, but we shall only be capable of achieving these objectives as set out in the National R&D and I Plan for 2000-2003 if a decisive contribution is made by the private sector, which in the pharmaceutical sector could amount to a significant sum. The primary task of the pharmaceutical industry is to produce drugs which contribute to maintaining or improving the health of our citizens, in accordance with the current level of knowledge. This implies the sector's participation in and support for research, promoting innovation and the improvement of the therapeutic potential to combat illnesses.
